10,000 Orphans Waiting to Be Loved – One at a Time
In 2011, All God’s Children International marked 20 years of service to orphans in Bulgaria. Over the past two decades, AGCI has helped improve orphan care in Bulgaria’s government-run facilities by providing much-needed food, clothing, bedding, diapers, and developmental toys. Financial support has increased the number of caregivers in some facilities to improve the level of individualized care and support to the children living in orphanages. Although great strides have been made, orphan care remains an important need throughout the country.
Our Orphan Care Work
Each year hundreds of children age out of Bulgaria’s baby orphanages and, most often, into a childhood of institutional care with little hope for a forever family. While basic care is adequate, these vulnerable children desperately need play areas, educational toys, and art and music therapy. This provides the intellectual, social, and emotional stimulation so critical for healing and learning to live beyond the walls of their orphanage when they age out of care at 18.
Through support from AGCI Partners, we have been able to respond in times of crisis, create healing art and music therapy programs, improve existing living conditions, and provide comfort and support. We look forward to a day in the not too distant future when we can once again open a Hannah’s Hope Home at one or more of Bulgaria’s government orphanages.
When a crisis happens the children can’t wait. In February 2011, AGCI responded to a cry for help from the baby orphanage at Varna after a devastating boiler room fire. Contributions helped replace the boilers and restore damaged portions of the building. Gifts of blankets, pillows and infant clothing helped restock the supply shelves. Development Center
AGCI transforms institutional facilities into places of healing and growth. At Kaspichan Orphanage in eastern Bulgaria, AGCI has opened a Creative Development Center for the children, ages three to seven. In the new center, children can experience therapeutic and educational opportunities through art, music and play. Other orphanages are asking for a center of healing for their children, too. For many years, the children of Dobrich have looked forward to AGCI’s “Christmas in July.” Gifts of shoes and toys, pizza, and a party complete with bubbles, balloons and even a clown help ensure that these children, age eight to eighteen, who have little chance of finding a forever family, grow up with memories of people who have taken the time to care about them.
